A collaborative masterpiece in Downtown Los Altos
Discover how 40 Main brought together the iconic vision of local legend William Maston and the precision execution of SDG Architects.

The most enduring structures are rarely the work of a single hand. They are born from a passing of the torch, a synergy of distinct talents working toward a singular, exceptional goal.
For 40 Main, that synergy represents the very best of Northern California architecture. The building was originally conceptualized and designed by the renowned local architect William Maston. When Maston transitioned into a well-deserved retirement after a storied 45-year career, the meticulous task of translating that design into reality was entrusted to the award-winning team at SDG Architects. SDG generated the complex construction drawings and is providing full construction supervision for 40 Main Street. The result is a stunning architectural landmark shaped by two generations of Bay Area design excellence.
Honoring the Legacy of William Maston
For nearly half a century, William Maston Architect & Associates has been one of the most influential forces in Silicon Valley architecture. Based right here in the peninsula, Bill Maston’s work has long balanced beautiful, practical spaces with the distinct site conditions of our local communities. But Maston’s impact goes far beyond the blueprints of private residences and mixed-use developments. Throughout his career, he has been a tireless champion for the community, dedicating a profound amount of pro bono work to local municipalities and non-profit initiatives. His volunteer advocacy, master planning contributions, and deep expertise in local zoning helped modernize and advance architectural standards across the South Bay.
Maston's devotion to the public fabric earned him multiple prestigious accolades, including the Mayor’s Award, the Contribution to Community Master Plan Award, and official California State Assembly Recognition for his outstanding business leadership. 40 Main stands as one of the final, crowning achievements of his remarkable career—a gift of timeless design to the heart of Los Altos.
Flawless Execution by SDG Architects
To bridge the gap between William Maston’s initial renderings and the physical structure of 40 Main, we partnered with SDG Architects.
As a premier, employee-owned California firm with over 30 years of experience, SDG specializes in solving the complex spatial, structural, and constructability challenges of higher-density urban landscapes. Recently recognized with top honors at the Bay Area MAME Awards, SDG brought their signature technology-based design practices to 40 Main.
From finalizing the sophisticated construction drawings to providing meticulous on-site construction supervision, SDG ensured that every window alignment, material transition, and structural line was executed to the absolute highest standard of luxury and safety.
The Design Pillars of 40 Main
- Contextual Modernism: William Maston’s initial vision masterfully respected the tree-lined, pedestrian scale of downtown Los Altos. SDG beautifully preserved this, utilizing varied massing and premium materials to ensure 40 Main harmonizes with the surrounding landscape while offering sweeping peninsula views.
- Intelligent Spatial Flow: SDG’s technical drawings optimized the structure for maximum natural light, expansive glass elements, and highly adaptable floor plans engineered for modern Silicon Valley lifestyles.
- The Walkable Pulse: Designed to invite connectivity, the active ground level blends seamlessly into Main Street’s world-class dining and boutique retail—a true reflection of Maston's lifelong commitment to thriving community spaces.
